The Athena SWAN Charter

The Athena SWAN Charter has been developed by the UK’s Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) to encourage and recognise commitment to combating underrepresentation of women in STEMM, and to advancing the careers of women in STEMM research and academia.

We take steps to raise the profile of women at the University to ensure that everyone understands and embraces the concept that equality for women is equailty for everyone. We annually mark International Women's Day recently publishing a Gender Equality Newsletter letting everyone know what we're doing and how we're making progess.

Below is a selection of case studies representing women across ISSS:

Jai Ni

Jai Ni, Research Associate, Microwave and Antenna Engineering Group

'I have worked as postdoctoral research associate at Microwave and Antenna Engineering Group, Heriot-Watt University, for 1 year. Prior to this, I pursued my PhD in microwave engineering at Heriot-Watt University. My research interests include novel microwave device designs for modern wireless communication systems.

In addition to my research, my outside interests include traveling, cycling, hiking, playing badminton and photography. I have travelled to more than 10 countries including South Africa and  Russia. In September, I successfully completed the cycling challenge of ‘Pedal for Scotland 2015.'

Maria Lorente-Crespo, Research Associate, Microwave and Antenna Engineering Group

'Maria Lorente-Crespo received the M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering and in Telecommunication Technologies, Systems and Networks from the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia in Spain, in 2011 and 2012, respectively. From 2010 to 2012 she was employed by the Valencia Nanophotonics Technology Center carrying on research on optical magnetic metamaterials. She is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Her research interests include the analysis and design of nano-antennas, plasmonic nano-structures and metamaterials applied to antenna systems. She is also a happy doggy mummy who enjoys long walks with her furry wee boy.'
