Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPaQS)
Formed in 2012, our Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPAQS) is one of the UK’s largest concentrations of researchers in photonics and quantum technologies with a breadth extending from fundamental concepts in condensed matter physics and quantum optics, to applied topics in industrial laser processing and astronomical instrumentation, to quantum sensing and nanoscale quantum devices.
Our staff play a leading role in the UK photonics and quantum technology communities and are part of major EPSRC investments such as Quantum Technology Hubs, Centres for Doctoral Training, and healthcare technology initiatives. We are also a centre of entrepreneurship and innovation, with several spin-out companies founded by IPAQS staff.

We study the science of light, and apply it to advance imaging, sensing, telecommunications and healthcare.

We host multiple opportunities for research study, and invite motivated candidates to join us for post-graduate study and research, through a Quantum Technologies MSc (1-year), that capitalises on our research strength to train students for the nascent quantum technology industry, and a series of PhD Schools, including our Doctoral Training Programme with a wide range of topics and several focused Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT).
