Research Futures Academy launched the Research Culture Grant in 2019 to support postgraduate research students and research staff to develop new student-led or post-doc-led initiatives to enhance research culture at Heriot-Watt University.

Research Futures Academy were pleased to receive 19 applications to be considered for the Research Culture Award 2019. Five of these applications were successful and are outlined below. These Research Culture Grant projects are led by small teams of PGR students and/or post-docs, and will run until 8 August 2020.

Research Culture Grant 2019 Funded Projects

Data Club – Dr Jen Remnant – SOSS - £2,000

Form a data-focused group of PhD/ECRs to promote analytical robustness, knowledge sharing and discussion.

Visualising Invisibles – Integration of Imaging Techniques for Characterizing Porous Materials – Dr Amir Jahanbakhsh – EPS - £3,000

Two workshops on x-ray, neutron and positron tomography, and SEM imaging techniques and their applications to build a collaborative community at Heriot-Watt University.

Development of culture within academia for female researchers – Matthew Andrews – EPS - £3,000

Creating a positive, welcoming and comfortable research culture for women and those who identify as women, through lunches and plenary lectures

HWU Postdoc Careers Symposium – Dr Christine Maier – EGIS - £2,000

Post-doc career symposium to develop collaborations within the network and to foster interdisciplinary research culture across Heriot-Watt University.

Creating Accessible Research and Innovation Networking (CARIN) – Siobhan Duncan – EPS - £2,000

Student-led robotics conference in the Orkney Islands with talks from experts in industry and academia, and student presentations.
