Connel is the Vice President for Education at Heriot-Watt University Student Union.

As a member of Court, his primary role is ensuring that the undergraduate and postgraduate taught learning and teaching experience is reflected, strategically, in the direction of the University and throughout its objectives. His background and experience lie within the student voice and academic representation. Connel has an MA (Honours) in Geography, Society and Environment from Heriot-Watt University.

Prior to his election, Connel was a Responsible Colleague and Customer and Trading Manager at Sainsbury's. This provided him with the experience of running shifts, delegating responsibility and upholding due diligence when required to ensure customer satisfaction and legal accountability. In addition, he has been a student ambassador for Heriot Watt University and worked with student recruitment through UniBuddies. He also sits on the Project Advisory Group for the Think Positive initiative run by NUS Scotland, which provides a sector perspective on any upcoming projects and ideas to tackle and support student mental health.

Connel's other interests and hobbies include  hillwalking, going to the cinema and socialising with friends and family.

As well as Court, Connell is a member of the Global Student Life Committee.
