Professor Jack Carr B.Sc., M.Sc., D.Phil., FRSE (1948-2016)
A Scholarship Fund has been established to commemorate the life and outstanding academic achievements of the late Professor Jack Carr, formerly Head of the Department of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University.
Professor Carr was widely acclaimed and admired for his inspirational contributions not only to the University, but also to the Scottish and international communities. He helped pioneer distance learning courses to remote centres in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, initiated Primary School Mathematics Masterclasses in Scotland, and was actively involved in developing links with the Edinburgh University department that created both the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Maxwell Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He remained active in retirement, and fully participated in teaching at the Ghana centre of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.
The aim of the Fund is to raise £200k to support scholarships for Heriot-Watt registered undergraduate and postgraduate students with connections to mathematics, music and Africa.
The Patron of the Fund is Lord Mackay of Clashfern.
