Actuarial Mathematics & Statistics
We are a world-leading centre of teaching and research in actuarial mathematics, financial mathematics, risk management, probability and statistics. Heriot-Watt was the first in the UK to offer a specialised programme in actuarial mathematics.
The School is currently in discussion with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries to secure reaccreditation and exemptions under the new Curriculum 2019 education strategy. Our full suite of undergraduate programmes is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society.
We are part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, pooling research and postgraduate activity with the University of Edinburgh, and we are home to the Scottish Financial Risk Academy.
We are recognised as a Center of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), North America. We are the only Center of Actuarial Excellence in Europe and one of only 30 other schools worldwide with this designation. With roots dating back to 1889, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) is the world's largest actuarial professional organization with more than 28,000 actuaries as members.
Additionally, we were awarded prizes for the Best Paper in two of the six categories at the 2018 International Congress of Actuaries. We were the only UK university to win a prize, and the only university in the world to win two prizes.
The new academic year at Heriot-Watt University will begin as planned on September 14, with welcome week activities for new students taking place beforehand. All programmes in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences are running. We are adapting the way we teach to a flexible approach called Responsive Blended Learning which will allow students to begin the academic year on schedule, wherever they are in the world.
