What is clearing?

Clearing is your opportunity to join us this September. It is a process designed to help you find an undergraduate or foundation course availability for the upcoming academic year with UCAS. You can use clearing if you didn't receive the results you wanted, or simply changed your mind about your chosen university course.

Applications are now open but spaces are limited so we advise you to apply as soon as you can to secure your place at Heriot-Watt.

Frequently asked questions

What courses are in Clearing?
There’s a common misconception that clearing courses are the ones that cannot be filled, but this is certainly not the case. Clearing is designed to help students gain a university place by letting them know which courses have availability and which courses are the right suitability for them. The clearing process results in thousands of placements each year and ends in successful, positive outcomes.
The courses available are released on the 5 July 2024, once original applications have been processed. Students still awaiting results can apply after A-level and T-level results day on 15 August 2024.

Can I go through clearing if I have an unconditional offer already?
Yes. If you have changed your mind on what you want to study, you can still go through clearing to explore other course options. To enter clearing and make an application, you must decline your place if you have been accepted to a university already.

Can I apply through clearing if I have missed the university application deadline?
Yes, you can apply to university through clearing even if you have not completed an original application. To do this, you must use the application form via UCAS to enter the clearing pool. If you are interested in a particular course, you can contact us directly to discuss the entry requirements prior to making your application.
