Workshop to Malakoff HWUM

Dr Adlansyah Abd Rahman, who was the leading trainer of the workshop, shared about sources and types of biomasses, methods and technologies of harnessing energy from biomass, biomass as a course of fuel for cofiring in existing coal power plants, experiences and current practices of cofiring, and the potential for Malaysia. Alongside him, Professor Dr Ramlan Zailani of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) shared the summary of the country’s National Biomass Action Plan, which was launched in December 2023.

This workshop plays a significant role as Malaysia has an abundance of biomass, mainly from commodity crop residues, which are valuable resources for bioenergy generation. Cofiring biomass in existing coal power plants is a proven method of utilising biomass, pioneered in the EU as cost-effective and providing a secure baseload power supply. Malakoff has also identified cofiring at Tanjung Bin Power Plant as one of the Flagship Catalyst Projects under Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap. It is essential that MPB engineers/staff are equipped with the necessary knowledge on cofiring.

The one-day training was conducted via lecture presentations and open discussion on current practices and experiences of cofiring, creating a conducive space to explore new knowledge and engage in a deeper understanding of the topic.
