The Fugees School in Kuala Lumpur faces significant challenges due to limited resources and financial constraints, directly impacting its capacity to deliver quality education and support the well-being of refugee children.

In response, students from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM), through the EmPOWER Programme, took the initiative to organise a charity football match on 7 March 2024 in Cyberjaya. This event was aimed at raising awareness and garnering financial support for the Fugees School. This noble initiative raised RM6,590, symbolising collective endeavours to support education and drive positive societal change, particularly benefiting refugee children.

The charity football match involved 26 players from both teams, comprising HWUM undergraduates and students from Fugees School. The atmosphere at TSI Mini-Stadium in Cyberjaya during the match was electrifying, with cheers and enthusiasm evident each time either team approached the goal box to attempt to score.

Each goal prompted the crowd to erupt into applause, reflecting the passion of more than a hundred spectators in attendance. This diverse audience included members of the public, HWUM students, and schoolchildren from around Cyberjaya, all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.

The stadium’s proprietors provided outstanding support, with three professional referees ensuring fair play and enhancing the event's energy and spirit. The match was highly competitive, and a fierce battle was visible where both teams displayed resilience and determination. The halftime score of 2-2 underscored the game's changing fortunes, emphasizing the players' never-give-up attitude. HWUM students not only showcased their skills but also dedicated themselves to uplifting the Fugees School children. The Fugee School's eventual 3-2 victory epitomised perseverance and hope against all odds.

Bowen Chew, a first-year student in actuarial science at HWUM, praised the event for drawing a large crowd while providing an enjoyable yet competitive experience. He stressed how the event showcased the students' dedication to equal opportunities, particularly benefiting the refugee students.

Another student, Fudhail Akhtar Fakhrul Anwar, who was also the leader of HWUM’s football team, spoke about the transformative power of education during the event. He emphasized its impact beyond mere entertainment by fostering personal growth, encouraging community engagement, and making a significant societal impact.

We received further commendation from Kudzai Charlton, Head of Education at Fugees School, for the contributions of the HWUM students. Kudzai emphasized the profound impact of these initiatives in raising crucial funds and supporting the school's mission. HWUM's generous contribution reflects a broader commitment to education and community welfare, highlighting the university's dedication to making a positive difference.

Special acknowledgment and gratitude are extended to Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, the Provost and Chief Executive Officer of HWUM, for his leadership and guidance in this noble cause. Thanks are also due to the Head of Heriot-Watt Global College Malaysia (HWGCM), Associate Professor Jasmine Low, Assistant Professor Renuga T. Rethinam and Assistant Professor Rohaya Daud, staff from HWGCM, and Marques Jeevan Menon, the EmPOWER programme director.

Engaging in charitable initiatives not only enriches lives but also embodies the essence of unity and compassion. It reflects our collective dedication to creating a brighter future for every child, irrespective of their background. Every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves it. Together, we have the power to turn dreams into reality and ensure a better tomorrow for all.
