It is with great sadness we have learned that former Academic Director and the founder of Edinburgh Business School, Professor Keith Lumsden, has died at the age of 84 after a long illness. He passed away on Saturday, at his home.
After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, Professor Lumsden went to Stanford University in California on a scholarship in 1959. He stayed in the US to complete a PhD and became immersed in how economics was being taught. Professor Lumsden was soon at the forefront of teaching innovation. He authored textbooks and “programmed learning” materials.
In 1975 Professor Lumsden moved to Heriot-Watt University, where he realised his ambition to create a distance-learning MBA, and within five years the Financial Times had named Heriot-Watt University the biggest producer of MBAs in the world.
Professor Keith Lumsden was also the visionary behind the regeneration of Adam Smith's Panmure House, and following his retirement from Edinburgh Business School in 2016, he served as Master of Panmure House in recognition of his contribution.
