On 8 November 2023, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s (HWUM) very own Dr Joel Yap from the Department of Psychology, School of Social Sciences, was invited to present at the EDUtech Asia 2023 convention (Asia's largest education conference and exhibition) held in the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Singapore. He had his own session on the EDUtech ‘Show & Tell’ section of the event, in which he talked about ‘Establishing a positive and enjoyable teaching and learning atmosphere using humour.’
The EDUtech Asia 2023 is a three-day event crafted by educators and made for educators, where people share the secrets, strategies, and stories that are reshaping the future of teaching and learning. This is where teachers, lecturers, ed-tech coaches, and administrators come together to reveal their best practices, practical innovations, and personal insights on how technology can revolutionize education.
From new assessment techniques to the utilisation and harnessing of technology in the classroom, EDUtech Asia 2023 was filled to the brim with new and refreshing ideas. Education is an essential part of our lives, and it is because of these people that its accessibility and availability continue to improve.
During Dr Joel’s featured session, he shared insights into incorporating humour to cultivate a dynamic classroom atmosphere, enhancing attendance by promoting a pleasant and relaxed learning environment and recognizing the significant impact of humour on the overall learning experience. Dr Joel is joined by hundreds of other exceptional people from across Asia where they too hope to contribute to enriching the environment for the learners of tomorrow.
On top of all the exhibitions, keynote speeches and presentations, this was also a chance for everyone to establish and strengthen their network in the education sector. In an ever-changing world, forging connections and partnerships is the best way to give spark to new ideas, because education is not only about teaching, but also inspiring and leading.
