Vivian Agbemabiese
Vivian Agbemabiese joined the Accounting Phd programme in September 2016. Her research is interdisciplinary and contributes to scholarship on 'Gender and Accounting' in a non-western context. Employing the lens of transnational feminist theory, the study investigates the accounting profession and the experiences of women professional accountants living and working in the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East. Despite being in the Middle East, the UAE is highly influenced by globalisation, and is a glittering hub of capitalism.
Vivian got a bursary from Newcastle University, UK to participate in the first inaugural workshop on 'Gender issues in Business Schools Network' in September 2018, and in July 2020 she presented her research at the Emerging Scholars Colloquium of the 2020 Critical Perspectives on Accounting Conference which was held at the Schulich Business School, York University, Toronto, Canada.
Background
Vivian completed an MSc in International Accounting and Finance from Heriot-Watt University in 2013, after which she joined the same university as an adjunct faculty member in 2015. In 2017, she completed a postgraduate certificate in academic practice and won first prize in the poster presentation. She has taught and tutored a variety of undergraduate courses including International Accounting, Accounting Theory, Managerial Accounting Decision Making, Research Methods for Accounting and Finance, and Management Accounting in Organisations.
Prior to joining Heriot-Watt University, Vivian’s career was in the banking industry with Barclays Plc (UK). She also holds a BA (Hons) in Economics and French.
