About
Dr. Suliman Alshahmy is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Heriot-Watt University Dubai. He teaches and leads postgraduate and undergraduate modules in sustainable finance, risk management, and financial market theory. Dr. Suliman has over 24 years of academic experience and more than 17 years of professional practice in financial markets. He is the founder and first CEO and Chairman of Libyan stock exchange in 2005. He specialises in financial regulation, sustainable finance, oil and gas disclosures, and corporate governance, and he supervises MSc and PhD research students. Dr. Suliman is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and brings international expertise from the UK, UAE, and Libya.

Research
Dr. Alshahmy’s research interests lie in the intersection of finance, energy markets, and sustainable development. His recent work focuses on the financial implications of oil and gas decommissioning, the role of artificial intelligence in sustainable finance, and the evolving landscape of blockchain and digital assets. He has published in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to edited books, and presented his findings at international finance conferences such as IFMB and BAFA. His research has received recognition through BAFA bursaries, and he is an active reviewer for the Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting. His interdisciplinary research addresses practical and policy-related aspects of financial transition, net-zero targets, and ESG frameworks.
