Biography

Karima Hamani is an Associate Professor of Construction Management and Surveying at Heriot-Watt University. With a PhD focused on corporate sustainability in construction, she has over 15 years of experience in project management, sustainability, and structural design. Since joining Heriot-Watt in 2009, she has undertaken roles such as Programme Coordinator for Facilities Management and Construction Management, and Academic Lead for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) at the Centre of Excellence in Smart and Sustainable Construction (CS2C). Additionally, she is the Chair of the Sustainability Committee at the Dubai Campus. Karima, a PMP, LEED AP, and Estidama PQP accredited professional, holds a bachelor’s in civil engineering and an MSc in Construction Project Management.

Research

Karima has been active in both industry and academia for over 15 years, focusing on sustainable design and construction practices. During her PhD, she developed a multi-criteria evaluation model to assess the sustainability efforts of construction contractors in the UAE. This research has made contributions to corporate sustainability and sustainable construction in the region. Moreover, Karima has interests in lean construction, the Last Planner system, and facilities and asset management. She is also keen on exploring learning and teaching methodologies, with a particular emphasis on project-based learning and resilience in higher education settings.
