Project Title

Dissolution of trapped CO2 in complex carbonates: A pore-scale 4D imaging and modelling study

Abstract

This project will use state-of-the-art 4D (i.e., time-resolved 3D) x-ray imaging to investigate the dissolution behaviour and fate of trapped CO2 in carbonate rocks at reservoir pressure and temperature conditions. The analysis will allow us to quantify the mass transfer of CO2 in non-CO2 equilibrated brine and reduction of the size of CO2 ganglia with continuous flow of brine. The observed processes will be modelled using direct numerical simulations and we will further use multi-stage upscaling workflows pioneered at Heriot-Watt University (HWU) to upscale results from the pore-to the score-scale sample and beyond. This project will be part of the newly established PETRONAS Global Technology Centre at HWU.
