Facilities

ICS offers a comprehensive package of analytical and technical services to outside companies. As a partnership of professional chemists (most of whom are Chartered Chemists) we have expertise and experience across all areas of chemistry. We possess a full range of major analytical and research equipment available to help solve industry's problems. All work is undertaken with speed, accuracy and a full guarantee of confidentiality, at very competitive prices. The following selection illustrates the breadth of services commercially available.

NMR Spectroscopy

We have four instruments, AVIII300 Nanobay, AVIII400, AVIIIHD400 and a 'Benchtop'.

Single Crystal Diffraction

A Bruker D8 Venture dual source (Cu & Mo) diffractometer (installation April 2019) with an Oxford Cryosystems Cryostream routinely running at 100K, whereby chemists can have the structure of their compound from a single crystal determined within a day.

Powder (Wide-Angle Scattering) Diffraction

Malvern Panalytical Empyrean X-ray Diffractometer

The Malvern Panalytical Empyrean diffractometer was installed in July 2021 and is capable of collecting both small and  wide-angle scattering (SAXS and WAXS) as well as PXRD data in both reflection and transmission mode.  There is flexibility in sample mounting (standard flat-plate or capillaries) for a range of measurements such as, reflectivity, grazing incidence XRD, stress and texture measurements as well as standard PXRD in Bragg-Brentano mode.  The samples always lie flat whilst the source moves, and the sample changer is configured with thirty positions. Samples can be liquids or solids (for example, thin films or powders).  SAXS is particularly useful for polymers and nanomaterials characterisation.

Elemental Analysis

Microanalysis for C, H and N is available on an Exeter Analytical CE440 analyser. Solids, liquids and air-sensitive materials can all be handled. Minimum sample mass typically 5mg.
