Clemens studied wool manufacture at the Scottish Woollen Technical College in Galashiels. At the age of 24 he became managing director of Cunart Ltd and was an active member of the Textile Institute, becoming a Vice-President in 1974. He is most famous for his work in human rights. He gave a lecture at The Peace Palace during a conference on reparations entitled 'The Relevance of Post-Holocaust Experience.' In 1996 he received the Officers Cross of Austria in recognition of his humanitarian work.
