Paying online by instalments
You can pay tuition fees and accommodation fees in instalments by setting up a recurring card payment plan, which allows staged payments to be made from your debit or credit card.
To set up a recurring card payment plan, you must:
- fully complete online enrolment (you must also wait 24 hours after completing enrolment before trying to set up a payment)
- activate your central Heriot-Watt University email account
You do not need to have a UK bank account to make recurring card payments.
The recurring card payment plan is the only extended payment method we offer for tuition and accommodation fees. You can set up a recurring card payment plan up to and including 14 October. After this date, you must pay by another method.
Tuition fee instalment schedules
Tuition fees are made in 6 instalments: one payment in late October, and then 5 monthly payments around the 15th of each following month.
Accommodation fee instalment schedules
If you want to pay the full year's accommodation by recurring card please make sure you select Semester 1, Semester 2 and – if it applies to you – Semester 3 for payment by recurring card. If you do not do this the semesters' accommodation you have not selected will not be included in the recurring card plan. This means you will have to pay for these semesters' accommodation in full 30 days after the start of the semester.
Fees for a 40 week accommodation contract are made in 9 instalments: a double payment in late October, and then 7 monthly payments around the 15th of each following month.

Once you've set up your recurring card payment plan, you will receive an advance notice email for each invoice. This tells you the exact dates and amounts when payment(s) will be taken. You will also be sent an email that confirms each monthly payment. (Hotmail/MSN users may experience problems receiving these emails because of the filters used by these providers.)
All successful payments will be shown on the credit or debit card statement you get from your card provider. If you have doubts about whether a payment has been processed please contact your card provider.
If a payment instalment fails, we will email you to say that we will try to take the instalment a second time within the next 5 days. If this second attempt fails, we will email the registered cardholder to tell them that an administration charge of £12 will be charged to the student. The failed payment instalment must then be paid immediately using another method. Further information is given in the student fee policies:
Changing your card details
You will need to change your card details if:
- your card is lost or stolen
- your card expires
- your card provider changes supplier (eg from Visa to MasterCard)
- you change your bank account
You should contact the Student Service Centre at least 5 working days before the next payment is due to be taken to change your card details.
Cancelling your recurring card plan
You can cancel your recurring card plan at any time, but the balance owed on the invoice must be paid in full immediately. Further information is given in the student debt policies above.
To cancel the recurring card plan, you must contact the Student Service Centre in writing 5 working days before the next payment is due to be taken.
