Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) launched the annual student conference, Watt Malaysia Exhibition and Conference 2023 (WattMEC 2023), on 12 April 2023. With the theme "Decarbonisation and Digitisation for Sustainable Development," this marked the beginning of an exciting event where attendees gathered to learn, network, and share knowledge.
WattMEC started in 2019 as an annual conference for engineering students, with the idea of providing a global platform for them to engage with people from various industries and backgrounds under one roof, with one purpose - to cultivate the spirit of knowledge sharing at a global scale, which is unachievable for traditional in-class oral presentations. The two-day conference will give students the opportunity to build relationships and network, as well as explore opportunities for collaboration with industry players.
Focusing on our engineering programmes, WattMEC is organised by our School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS). This conference features a series of presentations that focuses on three areas of engineering; mechanical, chemical, electrical, and electronic engineering. This year's conference also featured a keynote session by an industry expert, Dato’ Ir. Nor Hisham bin Mohd Ghazali, who is currently the Chair of the Malaysian Water Partnership, a member of the Board of Directors of Pengurusan Asset Air Berhad (PAAB), and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). His international affiliations include a Hon. Fellow of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations and Vice-President of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID).
As a purpose-driven, values-led global university, this event reflects our commitment to fostering a learning environment that not only equips students with technical skills but also nurtures their holistic development through social and environmental responsibility alongside skills that are highly sought after by employers.
