The Lyell Centre GRI (Global Research Institute) based at Heriot-Watt University and partners Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in Surabaya, Indonesia, and Phenikaa University (PU) in Hanoi, Vietnam are launching a new hybrid Global Recycling Lectureship Programme, supported by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), to overcome barriers and create solutions to improve rates of recycling and waste management in SE Asia.
As the global population breaks the 8-billion-mark, current rates of human production and consumption are unsustainable, threatening the lives and livelihoods of current and future generations. As recognised by the United Nations, we must create sustainable and prosperous futures by managing our resources safely, efficiently, and respectfully.
In SE Asia, projected forecasts estimate that they will become the second largest waste producer by 2100. This is due to a number of factors including rapid urban growth, large-scale increases in food production from the sea, and lack of sufficient knowledge, participation, and infrastructure to address waste demand through recycling.
Supported by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), the lectureship programme will consist of a series of keynote talks from experts in academia, industry and the third sector, with the aim to create a network that stimulates discussion and explores solutions that cross borders, on land and in the oceans, to address pressing challenges across the globe.
The first talk, taking place on 1 March from 9-10.30am, will focus on obstacles and challenges that affect 'Waste collection for recycling by informal sectors in Indonesia' and be delivered by Prof. Dr Enri Damanhuri from the Institut Teknologi Bandung.
To encourage engagement and change adoption, abstracts for each talk will be available in three different languages: English, Bahasa (Indonesia) and Vietnamese. This is to ensure ideas and solutions are disseminated effectively across partners.
Professor Thomas Wagner is leading the delivery and organisation of the lectureship on behalf of the Lyell Centre and said: "This is an exciting opportunity to break down barriers - both geographic and language - and talk directly with our SE Asia partners on how to tackle waste solutions and recycling challenges in their countries.
"Following Professor Damanhuri's inaugural talk, we have speakers confirmed from prestigious institutions in Vietnam, Switzerland and the UK, demonstrating the breadth of our network and potential to join-up our individual research for the future good of our planet.
"The talks are open to academic and non-academic audiences, and I encourage anyone working or interested in the recyclable waste sector to join us for these fascinating discussions that are truly international in nature."

The second talk in the GRLP series, from Dr Pham Duc Phuc at the Hanoi University of Public Health, is on 21 March and will explore 'Applying a One Health approach to optimise the benefits of wastewater and excreta'. Tickets will be made available soon.

Ketika penduduk dunia mencapai angka 8 miliar, laju produksi dan konsumsi manusia saat ini tidak berkelanjutan, sehingga mengancam kehidupan dan sumber kehidupan generasi sekarang dan yang akan datang. Seperti yang diakui oleh Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa, kita semua harus menciptakan masa depan yang berkelanjutan dan sejahtera dengan mengelola sumber daya kita secara aman, efisien, dan terhormat.
Asia Tenggara akan menjadi penghasil sampah terbesar kedua pada tahun 2100. Hal ini disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, termasuk pertumbuhan penduduk yang pesat, peningkatan produksi pangan dari laut dalam skala besar, serta kurangnya pengetahuan, partisipasi, dan infrastruktur yang memadai untuk mengatasi permasalahan sampah melalui daur ulang.

Didukung oleh Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) dan koordinator oleh Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Sciences di Heriot-Watt University serta dua mitra internasional di Asia Tenggara, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember(ITS) di Surabaya, Indonesia, dan Phenikaa University di Hanoi, Vietnam. Rangkaian acara ini akan memberikan gambaran global tentang kegiatan yang tengah berlangsung dengan fokus pada sampah plastik dan sampah yang dapat didaur ulang di Pulau Jawa (Indonesia) dan Vietnam.
Para narasumber berasal dari kalangan akademisi, industri, dan sektor terkait akan berbagi perspektif baru dan memperkenalkan teknologi mutakhir yang dapat meningkatkan pengelolaan sampah padat dan material yang dapat didaur ulang, melalui konsep ekonomi sirkular dan keberlanjutan. Kami mengundang para peserta yang memiliki ketertarikan pada topik dan memiliki pengalaman dalam bidang pengelolaan sampah untuk bergabung dalam kegiatan ini dan secara aktif berkontribusi dalam diskusi, baik pada saat acara berlangsung maupun setelahnya, melalui media sosial atau melalui halaman website kami.
Kami meluncurkan program dengan serangkaian tiga kuliah tamu, mulai akhir Maret 2023, dengan perkiraan pelaksaanaan satu bulan sekali. Kuliah tamu tamabahan akan diumumkan kemudian. Sekitar dua minggu sebelum setiap acara kami akan memberikan informasi lebih lanjut tentang pembicara termasuk abstrak materi yang akan disampaikan dalam bahasa Inggris, Vietnam, dan Bahasa Indonesia. Kami akan merekam setiap kegiatan kuliah tamu dan diskusi akan dilaksanakan di setiap acara. Khi dân số toàn cầu vượt mốc 8 tỷ người, tốc độ sản xuất và tiêu dùng hiện tại của con người là không bền vững, đe dọa cuộc sống và sinh kế của các thế hệ hiện tại và tương lai. Như Liên Hợp Quốc đã chỉ ra, chúng ta phải tạo ra một tương lai bền vững và thịnh vượng bằng cách quản lý tài nguyên của mình một cách an toàn, hiệu quả và biết trân trọng.
Ở Đông Nam Á, các dự báo dự đoán ước tính rằng đây sẽ trở thành nơi sản xuất rác thải lớn thứ hai vào năm 2100.
