New Executive Dean appointed to inspire excellence

A prominent figure in civil engineering, recognised with a CBE in today’s King’s Birthday Honours list, has accepted a senior leadership role at Heriot-Watt University.

Professor Muhammed Basheer FREng will join from the University of Leeds, on September 15, as Executive Dean for the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS).

With his exceptional leadership, expertise, and dedication, I am very much looking forward to working in partnership with Professor Basheer as he leads colleagues in EGIS to new heights of excellence in teaching, innovation, and impactful research.

News of his appointment comes as the King’s Birthday Honours list was published to recognise the achievements and services of people across the UK. Professor Basheer has been awarded a CBE for his significant contributions to civil engineering.

Commenting on his appointment to Heriot-Watt University, Professor Basheer said: “I am truly honoured and excited to join Heriot-Watt University as the Executive Dean for EGIS. It is a privilege to be part of an esteemed institution renowned for its commitment to excellence in engineering and physical sciences. I look forward to collaborating with the exceptional faculty, staff, and students at Heriot-Watt, as we push the boundaries of innovation, advance impactful research, and cultivate a thriving academic community. I am grateful for this opportunity and eager to embark on this inspiring journey at Heriot-Watt University.”

A graduate of the University of Kerala in 1981, Prof. Basheer has been with the University of Leeds since 2014, serving as their Head of School of Civil Engineering between August 2015 and March 2021.
