A Mechanical Engineering (Meng) graduate from School of Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS) of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) secured 1st prize at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Southeast Asia (SEA) Regional Level Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Competition that was held on 28 October 2023 in Tenaga National University (UNITEN).

SofE is a competition for young engineers designed to help develop verbal and visual communication in explaining technical mechanical engineering related subjects. The competition is organised and run annually by the Young Members of the Institution. Established in 1964, the competition continues to challenge young engineers to prove that they can communicate effectively. It is specifically concerned with verbal and visual communication in describing and explaining technical subjects. The SOfE competition heats take place across the globe. Winners from each heat are invited to participate in their regional final and the winners of the regional finals will be invited to participate in the annual Global Final, the winner of which will be crowned the overall SOfE winner.

Eddie Chung Di Wei, a Mechanical Engineering graduate from EPS said, "It's a wonderful event as I was able to hear from the country representatives from Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia about their captivating ideas on modern day complications, as well as sharing some of my thoughts in front of a crowd of prominent and forthcoming engineers."

Dr. Steven Hoo, an Associate Professor in EPS at HWUM added, "As an education transformer, I consistently aim to highlight the significance of soft skills for engineers in their professional journeys. An idea only comes to fruition when it is effectively advocated and communicated. And these kind of success stories are a testament to the quality of graduates we produce at HWUM.”

As the champion, Eddie Chung will be representing HWUM and the Southeast Asia Region to compete with other seven regions around the world at the IMechE Global Level SOfE next year.

Eddie Chung received a Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay Global Full Scholarship to study at Heriot-Watt University and graduated with a distinction (class of 2023). The scholarship was committed by Dato' (Dr) Victor Yeok Seok Kian, who was himself an alumnus of Heriot-Watt University. Eddie is currently working at Accretech Malaysia Sdn Bhd as a Sales Engineer.

Our heartiest congratulations to Eddie Chung Di Wei and our staff mentor for the student, Dr. Steven Hoo!
