A seminar for library and media school teachers was held at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) on 15 June 2023 as part of a CSR project in collaboration with Selangor State Education Department and CyberSecurity Malaysia. The seminar titled 'Empowering Library Media Teachers to Lead Change in Today's Educational Landscape,' gathered around 160 teachers from Selangor and Putrajaya.
There were four inspiring sessions/talks by distinguished speakers from the educational sector and CyberSecurity Malaysia that provided the teachers with an understanding of the evolving role of library media teachers in the current educational landscape. The seminar also explored the importance of digital transformation and technology integration in school resource centres. It discussed the areas of expertise and skills required to equip library media teachers with the knowledge to digitise and modernize school resource centres effectively.
HWUM, through our Information Services (IS) and its Library team, has been actively involved in this CSR project by reaching out to the school's community and advising schools to develop their resource centers with best practices in the library media environment. As an ongoing effort, the team also collaborates with the schools to provide information literacy support and activities. The project aimed to equip school students with the knowledge of digital resources and tools for higher education and to enhance our university's brand presence in the vicinity.
A Selangor State Education Department representative said, "The seminar was a great success, and JPN Selangor would like to express gratitude to Heriot-Watt University Malaysia for supporting library and media teachers in Selangor and Putrajaya to gain knowledge in resource centre digitalisation. We would also like to thank our esteemed speakers respectively from UiTM, the Librarians Association of Malaysia, Cyber Security Malaysia and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. Looking forward to the next collaboration."
The seminar concluded with a campus tour, and it was an effective platform for teachers to share ideas and innovative strategies for leveraging digital resources in the library media environment.
