Celebration Week at HWUM 2023

We will always look forward for this annual event where the Heriot-Watt University (HWU) community rejoices our ‘Celebration Week’ which offers the unique opportunity for colleagues across all five campuses to engage, network and celebrate our global community.

The Malaysia campus conducted three activities – the step challenge from 12 – 18 June, Global People Award presentation and cycling around the lake on 15 June.

Step Challenge

The Step Challenge gathered individuals and teams to take account of their own steps on a daily basis and everyone keyed in their daily results on the link provided. Around 14 individuals and 6 teams joined this activity to see who the highest step scorer was! Even our Provost and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi participated with his team.

Our EPS academic, Ayman William, won the individual category with 149,257 steps, followed by MRAC's Christine Wong with 137,744 steps and Nur Rasyiqah from Student Accommodation with 94,705 steps.

Ayman said, “I definitely would join this challenge again. Having it during the consolidation week was very helpful as I sit in front of my computer all day when there are no classes. This challenge made me want to get up when my watch tells me I have been sitting too long.”

'Group Key' (Wu Ken, Edina, Siow Yen) won the team category with a total of 261,593 steps, followed by 'Tri-Steppers' team (Jasmine Low, Andrew Lee, and Ling Hong) with 239,669 steps and 'Move It, Move It' team (Rick Low, Elyas Budiman and Heri Roziana) with 230,873 steps.

Cycling Around the Lake

The cycling around the lake activity was joined by a number of staff and students to enjoy the scenic view while having the opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle. Taking a break is vital for our mental health and wellbeing and this was one of the most fun activities that our community could do together. Some were even reminiscing the simple joys of riding a bicycle since they haven’t done so in such a long time.

Mazaya Mazli Mohan, an Undergraduate Student said, “This cycling event is truly relaxing, and I hope that this activity will be organised more in the future.”
