Professor to help safeguard Scotland's art heritage

Professor Kate Sang from Heriot-Watt University has been appointed to sit on the board of trustees for the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS).  

The Minister for Culture, Europe and International Development, Neil Gray, today announced Prof. Sang alongside four other new members, who will serve the NGS to promote and protect the national collection of Scottish and international art. 

Kate Sang is Professor of Gender Employment Studies, specialising in co-designing workplace solutions to creating inclusive and accessible workplaces for marginalised people. She has a particular interest in improving the working lives of women, neurodivergent people and those with long-term health conditions.  Through working with employers across the public, private, third sectors and trade unions, Professor Sang's work has created positive change for marginalised workers.

Professor Sang says she is delighted to have the opportunity to use her skills and experience to benefit the NGS, adding: “The National Galleries of Scotland hold a vital role in preserving our national art heritage, as well as showcasing the work contemporary artists from around the world. I am looking forward to working with the trustees to support the National Galleries of Scotland using my human resource management expertise.”

Joining Professor Sang in her new role are Apphia Campbell, Gemma Gray, James McConville and Dawn Thomson. The appointments are part-time, with a commitment of up to 12-days per year, and will begin on 1 October 2022 until 30 September 2026.   

The National Galleries of Scotland is governed by a Board of Trustees. There are up to 12 trustees on the Board at any one time and they are appointed by Scottish Ministers through an open appointments system.

The National Galleries of Scotland ranks within the top 30 most visited museums anywhere in the world and one of Scotland's most popular cultural destinations, welcoming around 2.7 million visitors a year to its Galleries before the Covid-19 pandemic.
