Dr Edward Tan

DBA Business Administration, 2020

What made you choose to study at Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University?
The Edinburgh Business School’s DBA programme offers me the flexibility to learn at my own pace as I have a full-time day job. Distance learning, with support from the university for online resources, is a plus as I can do my learning and research anytime and anywhere. It’s so convenient I even continued with my research while I was having my vacation overseas!

Why did you choose to study an online DBA in Business Administration?
The online programme is the natural choice for me as I cannot afford to study full-time or abroad due to family and work commitments.

Has your DBA research helped you solve challenges in the workplace?
The findings from the research have been very useful to identify the problems and solutions from the academic perspective, grounded in research conducted in similar fields and using established methodologies. This is a deviation from the traditional way to approach issues in the workplace. More importantly, the programme has further developed my critical thinking skills in problem solving.

How would you summarise your time studying an online DBA with the Edinburgh Business School?
It’s a challenging but fulfilling five years of study and research, while I juggle between work and family. It takes a lot of self-motivation and discipline to do research in the wee hours when I should be resting, and even more sacrifices of precious family time.

Tell us about your career since graduating from Heriot-Watt.
I am currently the Head, Corporate Services with the Traffic Police in Singapore, a new role I assumed about six months ago. I have been with the organisation for the past 13 years.

How has your DBA from Heriot-Watt University contributed to your career?
There may not be tangible differences such as promotion or career advancement, however, holding a doctorate degree definitely differentiates me from the rest as it’s a novelty. It also gives confidence to the senior management of my critical thinking skills and my ability to persevere in demanding situations.

How has your online DBA benefited you personally?
It’s self-fulfilment - to realise that I am capable to complete a very challenging academic programme at the highest level. The privilege to use the ‘Dr’ title is a dream come true, as I was never regarded to be academically inclined since young.

What advice do you have for current students?
You have chosen the long and difficult path to reach the apex of your education journey. Persevere but enjoy every moment.

What is your lasting impression of Heriot-Watt University?
It’s a university with a long and rich history. It definitely deserves a better standing in the university rankings. I am also looking forward to stepping foot in the university for the first time at the upcoming winter graduation in December 2022 with my family!

What are your aspirations for the future?
(a) For your career?
I am looking forward to new career opportunities, perhaps a new role that allows me to contribute to areas of my research interests.
(b) For your local and wider community?
Maybe volunteering as a motivational speaker for school children to never give up even if you are not academically inclined now - you may still achieve your dreams later in life. I hope that my learning journey can be an inspiration to all.
