Heriot-Watt is in the top 40 of the UK’s best performing universities, according to a new survey.

The University was ranked 39th out of 128 in the UK and 7th in Scotland in the Daily Mail’s inaugural league table.

All universities were measured against 12 key performance indicators that included graduate success in the jobs market and the effectiveness of signposting mental health and welfare services. It is also reportedly the only league table to assess the fairness of university admission policies, by recording the proportion of first-generation students whose parents did not go to university.

We believe that empowering our students to succeed is not just a goal; it’s our core mission.

The league table identified Heriot-Watt in the top quartile when it came to student outcomes with many graduates sourcing highly-skilled jobs with well-paid starting salaries.

The latest rankings follow the publication of the largest annual social survey ever conducted by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) that found 85.4% of Heriot-Watt graduates secure full-time employment or pursue further study within just 15 months of graduation.

Professor Richard A. Williams, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, said: “We take great pride in offering our students a unique learning and teaching experience that equips them with a strong sense of individual purpose, enhancing their  skills and confidence required to become a success in today’s workplace. It is pleasing to note that our strategic direction in this regard is being recognised and we’re seeing students thrive in their chosen careers.

"We believe that empowering our students to succeed is not just a goal; it’s our core mission. In the 2023 survey of graduate outcomes, the University is top in Scotland and 4th in whole of UK for graduate employment prospects.”

The Daily Mail’s University league table follows Heriot-Watt being named in Europe’s top 18% by QS. Earlier this month, the University topped another poll, this time for producing the highest percentage of CEO’s and MD’s by the financial services company, Novuna Business Cash Flow.
