Heriot-Watt University has claimed top spot for producing the highest percentage of CEOs among its distinguished alumni.

A new report conducted by the financial services company, Novuna Business Cash Flow, surveyed 121 UK universities and 9.7million alumni profiles on Linkedin, to trace the educational backgrounds of current entrepreneurs and business leaders.

It found that 15.76% of Heriot-Watt graduates have transitioned into CEO or MD roles, the highest percentage found anywhere in the UK.

At Heriot-Watt, we have always believed in nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit within our students, providing them with an environment where innovation and passion can thrive.

Furthermore, the University was crowned best in Scotland and sixth overall in the UK, for the number of entrepreneurs it produces.

The findings have been welcomed today by Professor Angus Laing, Executive Dean of the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University, who said: “We’re thrilled by the findings of this new study, which proudly reaffirms our university’s position as the incubator of the UK’s future business leaders.

“At Heriot-Watt, we have always believed in nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit within our students, providing them with an environment where innovation and passion can thrive. Our academic staff work tirelessly to empower and guide our young entrepreneurs, ensuring that they not only excel in their studies but also have the tools to transform their visions into reality.

“We take great pride in shaping the next generation of business leaders who will drive innovation, prosperity, and positive change in our society. This recognition reinforces our commitment to fostering excellence and creating a fertile ground for dreams to flourish.”

Head of Commercial Business at Novuna Business Cash Flow, John Atkinson, said: “Our research underlines that success in the business sector isn’t exclusively from premier universities as traditionally perceived.

“Several universities, often not highlighted in typical rankings, are proving pivotal in shaping future founders and business frontrunners. We believe our findings will provide a new viewpoint for the next generation of ambitious professionals.”

The news comes on the back of a 2021 study carried out by Hitachi Capital Invoice Finance, when Heriot-Watt again topped the table for producing the most CEOs and MDs in Scotland.

Heriot-Watt University has a distinguished history in enterprise and entrepreneurship with a range of academic programmes and key links with industry. This unique learning experience gives students real-life insight into how modern business works and equips them with the confidence, knowledge and experience required to succeed.
