HWUM Chem-E-Car 2023

Chemical Engineering (CE) students from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) emerged as Champion in the Poster Competition at the 15th Malaysia Chem-E Car Competition 2023, held on 4 to 5 November 2023. The event was hosted by University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) at their campus in Shah Alam, Selangor.

After a 4-year hiatus, the Malaysia Chem-E Car Competition returned, bringing over 100 students from 19 universities in Southeast Asia. Jointly organised by The Institution of Chemical Engineers-UiTM-Student Chapter (IChemE-UiTM-SC) and The Institution of Engineers Malaysia-UiTM-Student Chapter (IEM-UiTM-SC), the event aims to showcase the creativity and ingenuity of the competitors in utilising their expertise to conquer a series of trials with their originally designed, chemically powered shoebox-sized car.

These trials included carrying a specific load of water to a given distance, hitting a ball or bowling pins and then stopping autonomously. The design of the car was also judged based on their ability to complete tasks, design creativity, and issues related to safety, environment and health.

Darren Lim Ming Qian, Patrick Tan Yee Siang, Toon Ho Yan and Xuen Ler Loi, also known as Team DPHX, made up the brilliant quartet of third-year CE students that earned their win in the poster category.

Their poster beautifully captured the essence of their project, showcasing the student's passion for chemical engineering and sustainable solutions to the environment. The student team adopted additive manufacturing techniques to intricately incorporate their chemical engineering expertise into the design and development of their chemically propelled vehicle.

Under the guidance of two HWUM academics, Assistant Professor Dr. Wong Voon Loong and Assistant Professor Dr. Choy Sook Yan, Team DPHX gained plenty of insights and support to do their best in this competition.

HWUM sincerely congratulates Team DPHX and their mentors on this well-earned victory!
