Dr Roger Spark

Senior Technician

PhD

I joined the School in 2000 as a Chemistry Technician, to deliver practical classes for the, previously offered, BSc (Hons) Colour Chemistry programme. I also have responsibility for supporting PhD students in the chemistry lab and the chemistry instrument lab in the research area. We now support a range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate students in chemistry, technology and testing.

Since 2004, I have also been providing a digital printing service for the School. I run a wide-format Mimaki inkjet printer, printing directly on to a range of specially prepared fabrics. Once processed, these printed fabrics form a key part of many Textile Design and Fashion students’ degree shows.

Background

On leaving school in 1987, I worked for 4four years at Glaxochem Ltd in Montrose as a laboratory assistant and gained an HND at Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology in Aberdeen.

I then spent 8 years at the University of St Andrews, graduating with a BSc (Hons), MPhil and PhD in Chemistry. The subject of my MPhil, investigating Pigment Yellow 13, sponsored by Ciba-Geigy, proved to be a useful link to the School here in Galashiels when I joined in 2000.
