About us

The School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) provides a collaborative research and teaching environment organised into our five institutes:

In addition to our five institutes, the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) in Orkney is a specialised arm of the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences.

Our programmes

Within our core disciplines we offer research-led programmes of undergraduate and postgraduate study, many of which provide professionally-accredited qualifications. Our programmes are often highly rated in national surveys. Consequently, our graduates are highly sought after by employers worldwide.

We pride ourselves on our international activities. Many of our programmes are also offered at our Dubai Campus and our Malaysia Campus. Online study is also an option for some postgraduate degrees, facilitating learning in any country in the world.

We strive for excellence in our support to all students studying with us and our staff are committed to providing educational and professional support that is fair, friendly and timely.

Our research

Our research institutes carry out work in fields that are relevant to industry and society, including topical issues such as:

  • Sustainable cities
  • Real estate / commercial property markets
  • Carbon capture and storage
  • Life sciences
  • Water conservation and drainage
  • Low carbon buildings
  • Marine conservation
  • Petroleum engineering and geoscience

We pride ourselves on our outward looking approach to research, typified by our strategic collaborations with the University of Edinburgh through the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering (ERPE) and the strategic Research Alliance with the University of Edinburgh.

The School is also recognised as a Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design by the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is one of only four such Centres established at UK universities that jointly form a national network to demonstrate and exchange best practice in teaching and research for the sustainable built environment.

REF 2021

The UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF) of 2021 classed 86.8% of our research and 88.6% of our research outputs ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent.
