What made you choose to study your programme with Heriot-Watt Online?
Several factors influenced my decision to pursue my MSc through Heriot-Watt Online. First, I was drawn to the university’s strong reputation and international accreditation, which gave me confidence in the value and recognition of the degree. Word-of-mouth recommendations from alumni further validated my choice, especially those who spoke highly about the practical nature of the programme. I particularly appreciated how the curriculum integrates theoretical frameworks with real-life business challenges, offering case studies from globally recognised companies that help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.
The tuition discount offered to emerging countries made the programme financially accessible without compromising on quality. Finally, as a full-time working mother of a four-year-old, the programme’s flexibility was a key factor - it allows me to pursue a degree at my own pace without compromising my family or professional responsibilities.
Overall, how has your experience studying online been so far?
My experience with Heriot-Watt Online has been highly rewarding. The modules are extremely relevant to my day-to-day responsibilities at work, and I’ve already applied many of the learnings in tangible ways. I’ve completed three modules so far and am currently enrolled in two more, and at no point have I felt that any topic was disconnected from real-world scenarios. The structure of the programme ensures consistent alignment with current business challenges, which keeps me engaged and eager to learn more.
What aspects of your degree really appeal to you?
What I appreciate most about this degree is its flexibility, relevance and practical nature. The ability to study at my own pace is essential given my demanding professional and personal responsibilities. The content is consistently applicable to my work and I often find myself making connections between the material and actual events in my organisation. I’m also fascinated by how the programme introduces concepts that explain behavioural or organisational patterns I’ve noticed for years but never had names for - like resistance to change or decision-making biases. These insights not only increase my self-awareness but also help me support others more effectively. Moreover, the programme encourages critical thinking and reflection, fostering a mindset that questions assumptions and seeks continuous improvement.
What impact has your degree had on your career so far?
The impact has been immediate and significant. One of the most notable applications was the change management guide I developed based on the Organisational Change and Development module. Our leadership team has well-received it and is now using it to support people managers across the organisation. Additionally, as I recently transitioned into a leadership role, I’ve found the material from the Leadership and Leadership Development module particularly useful in shaping my management style. Understanding different leadership models and when to apply them has given me more confidence in handling team dynamics and individual development needs.
What challenges have you faced while studying and has the flexible nature of Heriot-Watt Online helped with any of these challenges?
Studying online can sometimes feel isolating, especially when grappling with complex concepts without the immediate support of peers or instructors. There are moments when I’ve struggled to fully comprehend specific topics on the first pass. However, the self-paced structure of the programme has allowed me to revisit these areas in my own time, often with greater clarity. This flexibility has been essential, particularly when balancing my studies with work and family life. Knowing that I can manage my learning around my schedule, rather than being confined to rigid deadlines, is reassuring.
What would you say to people considering studying at Heriot-Watt Online?
I would strongly encourage anyone to consider this path to take the step. The programme offers exceptional value for money, especially when you factor in the quality of the content and the university's reputation. The topics are insightful and presented through diverse lenses, allowing learners to explore them from theoretical, practical and global perspectives. Whether looking to advance your career, enhance your understanding of organisational behaviour, or grow intellectually, Heriot-Watt Online provides a robust and supportive learning experience tailored to modern professionals.
