"HighWire was founded to ensure that its partners - scientific societies and responsible publishers - would remain strong and able to lead the transition toward use of new technologies for scientific communication. Concerned that scientific societies separately would lack the resources and expertise to lead a major technical infrastructure shift in publications, Stanford University, in founding HighWire, accepted the role of partner, agent of change, and advisor. Begun as a close collaboration of scientists, librarians and publishers, it has not strayed from that model in its seven years of rapid growth." NICE WEB SITEIn the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive. National Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library: NSDL http://nsdl.nsf.gov/ This month's Nice Web Site is not really a 'nice web site' at all, because at the present time there is very little information available at it. However, the NSDL, an American initiative, is very much a site/service to keep an eye on. Here's what it says about its future:
Roddy MacLeod PRESS RELEASES**** Expanded NGfL relaunches **** The National Grid for Learning (NGfL) portal [www.ngfl.gov.uk] has been relaunched. The site has a new image-driven design which represents a radical change from its previous look. It has been restructured and rebuilt to cope with the ever-increasing quantity of content that makes it the largest educational portal of approved sites. The NGfL is part of a Government initiative which aims to widen access to learning for everyone in all sectors of education, both formal and informal. The portal incorporates quality-assured educational web sites for people of all ages and interests. The site has been growing rapidly since it was first launched in 1998, and the relaunch reflects the huge range of resources now available to visitors. The relaunched site features: Tel: 024 7684 6994 **** Northern Light Discontinues http://library.northernlight.com/FB20020108420000192.html Northern Light(R) Technology, LLC, (www.northernlight.com), the wellknown search engine and content integration provider, has announced it is refining its business to focus more exclusively on the needs of enterprise customers. These address new and crucial areas of concern within the broad fields of engineering, environment and technology, and management and business administration. Inderscience is pursuing its philosophy of mapping emerging and developing research disciplines and linking with centres of excellence worldwide to provide authoritative coverage of up-to-date issues. Its goal is to foster and promote innovative thinking: the expertise and experience of leading policy makers and leading figures in industry and academia are brought to bear on some of the most important issues of the day. The new and forthcoming journals join Inderscience's already impressive portfolio. Technology coverage now includes topics such as agriculture; automotive technology and management; biotechnology; CFD; computing, information technology and communication; energy, environment and sustainable development; healthcare technology and management; Internet and Web engineering; manufacturing and materials; and sports and entertainment technology and management. 18 years ago, Inderscience published its groundbreaking International Journal of Technology Management, (winner of the prestigious ANBAR Golden Page Award for 2000), which played a key role in coining and defining the term and discipline of technology management. And Inderscience is still publishing pioneering journals. The journals are available in paper or electronic format. Individual papers may be paid for and downloaded from the Inderscience Web site. Sample copies of journals may also be downloaded or requested in paper format. The full list of journals may be found at http://www.inderscience.com/catindex.html. For further details, contact Dr. Jeanette Brooks **** New look and feel for Institute of Physics Electronic Journals service **** Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP) has launched a new and improved version of its Electronic Journals service. Designed to enhance on-screen navigation, the new service makes it much easier for users to get to the content they want, in even fewer clicks. New features that have been introduced include 'Content Finder', which allows readers to go straight to any given article or issue without having to 'drill down' through the journal content. For librarians, a new channel has been added to ensure that all of the information they need is at their fingertips, including registration and subscription details, pricing and ordering information and tailored online help pages. Similar channels for IOPP's other key user groups, its authors and its referees, have also been introduced. By popular demand, a new facility enabling institutional subscribers to add their organizations' logos to the Electronic Journals Web pages has been added and, finally, those using usernames and passwords to access personalization options, etc, will now find the process much more user-friendly and seamless. The new service can be found online at http://www.iop.org/EJ/ Institutional subscribers qualify for free full-text access to the titles to which they subscribe. For non-subscribers, all of the journal's tables of contents and abstracts are freely available, as are a number of Featured Articles for each title. The conference aims at bringing together world-class researchers and professors in industrial engineering and e-commerce to address major aspects such as business models, enabling technologies, engineering applications, human factors, and policy and security. The conference will focus on the emerging issues of industrial engineering and electronic commerce in the context of engineering services involving product innovation, manufacturing opperations, logistics and supply chain, sales and marketing, customer services and technical support. It aims to provide a major forum for researchers and practicioners to review past developments and to identify possible directions for further developments. The objectives of the conference: Topics of IE&EM Topics of IceCE Contact: BOOK REVIEWReview of: Digital Futures: strategies for the information age This is the first in what is planned to be a series of Digital Futures volumes, each of which will look, in detail, at major topics in digital library research and development. It is intended to be of interest to librarians, information managers and archivists of all kinds, from the education, public and corporate sectors. We are all aware of the growth in the amount of information available at our fingertips. Yet, as Deegan and Tanner point out in the introductory chapter of this book "Information has to be selected or discarded, read or not read, but it cannot readily be ignored." This book looks at how those involved in the management of information can produce digitised materials, locate electronic information relevant to their users, integrate it into their institutions and make it accessible, manage the technology needed to do so, and attempt to anticipate future trends in the digital age. This topic lies at the very heart of the information profession. Deegan and Tanner have produced a very thought-provoking and wide-ranging text. They look at issues concerning the digitization of a whole range of materials from music, photographs, film, grey literature, periodicals and other print media, manuscripts, and so on, giving examples of existing digitization projects in each case. They look at the role of libraries in collecting and managing access to digital materials and the opportunities and problems associated with this process. They also look at the economic factors involved in providing access to digital information, including costs involved in purchasing digital content, the market for digital information, transaction models, management costs and sustainable development. Information retrieval of electronic resources is covered, as are the underlying components of digital library systems. In this context, interoperability and digital library architectures are discussed, and also protocols and standards. Portals, being a means of disseminating electronic information, are an important part of the digital jigsaw, and are analysed in depth in Chapter Seven. Being involved in the development of a portal for engineering, mathematics and computing, I found this chapter particularly interesting. Following this, there is a long chapter on preservation of digital materials, and this is followed by a discussion of the changing role of librarians in the digital age. The final chapter looks at what is on the near horizon for libraries in terms of digital information. A fascinating and absorbing book, by two authors who know their subject well. By coincidence, this month's Nice Web Site is the NSDL, a digital library of the future. RM NETWORK NEWS
