The webserver configuration has been set up to allow either "libwww" or "libWWW" to be used in the address of this Newsletter. This means is that if you are typing the address into your Web browser it can now either be entered as http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.html or http://www.hw.ac.uk/libWWW/irn/irn.html
Students and staff of UK universities may not realise that their institutions incur a charge each time they view a Web site from the US (unless they are accessing the Web in the early hours of the morning, or viewing a page which has been retrieved through a national or institutional cache). That being the case, it makes sense to access only UK Web sites wherever possible, or to make sure that the site to be viewed contains relevant information. This Newsletter points towards many UK Internet resources and, hopefully, the brief descriptions enable readers to choose which sites to visit. In addition, there are several indexes, sometimes known as 'search engines' which focus on UK resources, such as the following:
UKplus
UKplus are about to embark on a 7 figure promotional campaign to publicise
this site!
Mirago
Mirago is aimed at UK businesses and families. As well as indexing the UK
in depth, Mirago also points to selected commercial, entertainment and
educational sites worldwide.
UKMax
This index is currently being widely advertised nationally.
The best way to make sure that a site to be viewed contains relevant information is to find resources using a subject gateway, because its the Web sites they reject which make the subject gateways so useful! The gateways listed in PINAKES: A Subject Launchpad point only towards quality Web sites. They make excellent starting points for academics looking for Internet resources. For those who want to know more, Ayala Ochert wrote an interesting article in the Times Higher Education Supplement on January 8 (page 13) about the subject gateways.
