NICE WEB SITE

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

The European Library
http://www.theeuropeanlibrary.org/

This is an ambitious project. The European Library searches the content of European national libraries. From the users guide: "The European Library gives centralised access to the resources of the 47 national libraries of Europe. You can find all kind of material. Original documents, text books, maps, photographs, music, etc.. And ….you can quickly check whether a national library has digitised a particular item!"

The aim is that the European Library will gradually to incorporate all national libraries of the Council of Europe member countries as full-participants.

NEW BOOK REVIEW

Going the distance: Library instruction for remote learners
Edited by Susan J. Clayton
facet publishing, 2007
978-1-85604-619-0
£39.95

Once again, time does not permit a proper book review this month, so this will be the briefest of looks at this new title on library instruction and distance learning.

With the growth of virtual learning and learning at a distance, assistance with library and information services for distance learning students is becoming more and more important.

This new book, edited by Susan Clayton, who is Off-Campus Services Librarian at the University of Redlands, includes contributions from twenty-six librarians.

The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 covers aspects of designing distance instruction; Part 2 covers delivering distance instruction; Part 3 deals with aspects of collaborating with faculty and IT staff, and Part 4 is concerned with assessing distance education.

All the chapters in this book deal with real-life issues, however because each one of the contributors is based in the USA, the result is very much an American perspective on the issues at hand. The chapters which 'travel' the best are the ones covering design and organisational elements. If you're involved in library assistance for distance learning courses (I don't particularly like the term 'library instruction' but I also don't want to get into a long discussion over terminology) you may find it interesting to read about the experiences detailed in this book. One criticism I have is that some chapters are rather short, and do not really allow their authors to do much more than introduce and briefly enlarge upon the main issues of concern.
