Repositories Report

Linking UK Repositories - Report

The research community should be engaged at the highest level to encourage the establishment of repositories in UK education and research, says a report published today. While one third of UK universities have an Open Access repository to house digital content such as research papers, pre-prints, theses, working papers, conference proceedings, teaching materials, etc., most have very little content in them, the report continues.

Acknowledging that an important foundation has already been laid in the establishment of a repository infrastructure for the UK, the report – commissioned by JISC – says, however, that the time is right for the development of the shared, national services upon which a step-change in the adoption, development and use of institutional repositories now depends.

The report was written by Alma Swan of Key Perspectives and Chris Awre of the University of Hull.

The report is available from the Digital Repositories page at: http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=programme_digital_repositories

Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

JISC agreement with Oxford University Press brings 135 years of scholarly resources online

An archive totalling over 3 million pages from 300,000 journal articles and encompassing over 135 years of human knowledge is being made available free of charge to the UK academic community in perpetuity.

JISC and Oxford Journals, a division of Oxford University Press, have announced an agreement which will see major collections of journal articles in the humanities, sciences, medicine, law and the social sciences made available to all higher education institutions, collections which include many of the leading titles in their fields over the last two centuries.

The agreement represents a significant commitment to the widening of access to major scholarly resources and follows a programme of digitization undertaken by Oxford Journals. Functionality incorporated by the archive includes full text pdfs of each article with HTML headers and abstracts, full text searching, the inclusion of all images and graphics, and links to 'similar articles in this journal'.

For further details of the JISC/OUP agreement, please see: http://www.jisc.ac.uk/coll_oxfordjournals.html
