Random Quotes

"If we consider that there are thousands upon thousands of users, accessing millions of articles, written by hundreds of thousands of authors, in as many publications, through tens of thousands of libraries and organisations, whose holdings are supplied by tens of thousands of publishers, who in turn can provide access to approaching a third of a million titles of which some 15,000-plus are available online, you can begin to understand just how complex the supply chain has become!"
Margaret Dunne, talking about the role of subscription agents and intermediaries in the serials supply chain. "Subscription agents – from paper to electronic" Library + Information Update, Vol 4(11), November 2005, pp37-39

"Blogs are darned good therapy for people who need to get stuff off their chests and don't care who, if anyone, reads it. The best of them share useful information and welcome thoughtful feedback - but they fall down when the motivation is self-aggrandisement." David Tebbutt, from the article "Shut up until you have something to say" Information World Review, November 2005.

NICE WEB SITE

In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

Netvibes
http://www.netvibes.com/

Netvibes is one of the best sites I've come across for a long time. It enables you to create your own web-based home page, which you can access from anywhere. It's extremely easy to use, and easy to add content of interest. I think it has great potential for further development.

Here are some key features:

  • Browse, modify, and import RSS feeds with an integrated RSS/ATOM feedreader. You can easily import an OPML file as well.
  • Import, download and listen to podcasts without any additional software
  • Check your e-mail on one or many Gmail accounts; stick web notes and weather updates; and many more features to come!
Definitely check this one out!

ingenious
http://www.ingenious.org.uk/

Apart from the fact that the home page makes me feel dizzy, this is an interesting site with some novel ideas for making connections between different kinds of information materials.

Ingenious brings together images and viewpoints to create insights into science and culture. Drawing on the resources of NMSI, the site contains over 30,000 images which are used to illustrate over 30 different subjects, topics and debates.

The key NMSI contributors to the site are the Science Museum, the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, the National Railway Museum, the Science & Society Picture Library and the Science Museum Library.

BLOGORAMA

News about weblogs, RSS, etc:

Webopedia gives a definition of RSS http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/R/RSS.html

The Internet Resources Newsletter has an RSS feed (essentially the Table of Contents for each issue): http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.rss

Blogcritics
http://blogcritics.org/
"More than 50,000 daily visitors rely upon Blogcritics.org -- the famously "sinister cabal" of more than 1,100 bloggers -- for the latest news, opinions, and reviews on music, books, film, TV, popular culture, technology, and politics. Blogcritics.org is a filtered microcosm of the blogosphere and a full service news and reviews source, covering all aspects of contemporary culture and society."

TagCloud
http://www.tagcloud.com/index.php
I saw this one at Phil Bradley's Blog.
TagCloud is an automated Folksonomy tool. Essentially, TagCloud searches any number of RSS feeds you specify, extracts keywords from the content and lists them according to prevalence within the RSS feeds. Clicking on the tag's link will display a list of all the article abstracts associated with that keyword.

Publishers Missing a Niche?
http://blogs.fletcher.tufts.edu/rss4lib/archives/000848.html
This is an interesting post from the RSS4Lib Blog, which I completely agree with.

"RSS-ssh: it’s really simple" by Leonard Latiff, Library + Information Update, Vol 4(11), November 2005, pp43-44.
"For me the most interesting implication is that RSS readers mark the way the internet might work in the future. With the huge amount of content being added to the internet, web portals and aggregators will become an important tool (and filter) for users."

As part of a major project, SAGE Publications is delighted to announce that it has digitized the last 59 years of Human Relations, making such ground-breaking articles as Festinger's "A Theory of Social Comparison Processes" from 1954, available online for the first time.

As a result, SAGE is able to offer access to all Human Relations content dating back to 1947 on SAGE Journals Online (at http://hum.sagepub.com) for no additional cost to an institutional subscription in 2006.

Published in association with the Tavistock Institute, Human Relations is one of the most prestigious and longest running academic journals in the management community.

For more information or press enquiries, please contact Becky Fishman
at: becky.fishman@sagepub.co.uk, or call + 44 (0)20 7324 8508

**** Index to Theses announces flexible new subscription options ****

Index to Theses http://www.theses.com/ the only comprehensive repository of British and Irish theses, has announced a series of flexible new subscription options to complement its recent expansion of coverage.

From 2006, customers will be able to dispense with the print or online editions as appropriate, subscribing to either the print edition only, the online service only, or continue with the combined offering.

This new service is just part of a series of enhancements implemented by the publishers, Expert Information, over recent months. Other value-added developments include: the addition of a back file covering theses dating back to 1716, bringing the current collection total to nearly 500,000 theses listings; the addition of 44,000 new abstracts covering the period 1970 – 1985, bringing the total of abstracts available in the collection to nearly 250,000; improved searching linking old and new university names; increased publication cycle from the committed 4 times per year to 6 times per year, and sometimes more, to cope with increased submissions.

I saw this band play recently, and they were terrific!

Send me your band websites, and if they're good, I'll try to mention them in future 'Book This Band' sections.
