"Many journal publishers now accept the text of authors' papers on disk but most still require the author to submit figures, tables and photographic material in the form of hard copy, this makes it impossible to submit a paper electronically. However, a major concern of authors and publishers alike is the length of time between submission of the paper and its final appearance in a printed journal (publication time).
The ESPERE project is investigating the technical and cultural issues involved in these new developments, particularly with regard to the biomedical sciences. In these disciplines (as also in others) graphics and tables are an important part of the journal article and the project is looking at portable formats and user-friendly methods of transferring files."
