According to a cover story which appeared in the Online section of The Guardian on 14th May, pornography is the third biggest Web earner, after computers (for hardware and software purchases) and travel (for tickets). You can make what you will of that statement, and this column is not the place to moralise over such matters, but it gives me the chance to reiterate that the purpose of this newsletter is to focus attention on a completely different aspect of the Internet. This newsletter attempts to alert readers to the abundance of 'serious' new Internet resources which appear every day. Here you will find brief descriptions, or sometimes extracts, of resources which have been identified as being of potential interest to academics, students, and researchers especially in science, social science, and engineering. New e-journals, recruitment agencies, university departmental sites, professional associations, focused search engines, directories, databases, student magazines, publishers, mailing lists, reference material, research centres, are the sorts of resources I include, along with miscellaneous resources which I think may be useful.
