Project title

An Exploration of Collaborative Adaptation Pathways: Case studies of Edinburgh and Shenzhen

Project abstract

The rising sea level brings about long-term, continuous, diverse cross-domain uncertainties for the development of coastal cities, making traditional linear planning inadequate. To address this inadequacy, Adaptation Pathways (APs) were developed, offering flexibility in planning through multiple paths and adaptation options. However, they often overlooked the realities at the social and policy levels. This research aims to explore the scope of Collaborative Planning (CP) theory and practice in developing Adaptation Pathways with stronger attributes of democratic participation and collaborative decision-making through a comparative study of Edinburgh and Shenzhen, utilising stakeholder mapping, questionnaires, Delphi methods, and potentially serious gaming.
