Constructionarium

Each year Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Quantity Surveying and Construction Project Management students take part in a week-long Constructionarium field course. The Constructionarium field course provides a "hands-on" construction experience where Year 2 students can work alongside professional engineers and tradesmen to construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world. The aim is to allow students to apply the knowledge they have gained at university in a practical, safe and relevant environment.

Planning is a key part of Constructionarium. Students undertake to spend time preparing plans for their civil engineering projects well before working on site. This involves understanding material performance, costs, on-site risks and constructing a method statement. During the Construction week students then construct their project in groups of 10-12. During the week there are daily budget and progress checks to ensure everything runs smoothly. In recent years the projects constructed were:

1. Millennium Galleries 2. The Barcelona Tower (Torre de Collserola) 3. Kingsgate Footbridge

For many students Constructionarium is one of the highlights of their time at Heriot-Watt University and they will mention it prominently in their CV.
