Reassessment procedures

Reassessments include resit examinations and the re‑submission of projects, coursework, or dissertations.

If you are being reassessed in a group of synoptically linked (subject‑related) courses, you will take one single synoptic examination instead of separate exams for each course. In this case, you only need to pay one reassessment fee for the synoptic exam.

Please note this includes all reassessments scheduled during the year.

Registering for Reassessments

Students who received a progression decision (please refer to Student Self-Serve) from the February 2026 Boards of Examiners’ meetings are eligible to take reassessments during the April/May diet. Reassessments taken at this time are typically for postgraduate students who started in January 2025.

The final date for registration and payment of the reassessment fee for the April/May diet is Monday 20 April 2026.

Most reassessments take place during the August diet. You will be able to view the Board of Examiners’ decision, including which course(s) you must be reassessed in, on your Student Self‑Serve record.

The registration period for reassessments at the August diet is Monday 29 June 2026 to Sunday 26 July 2026. If you are taking reassessments due to approved mitigating circumstances, then you do not need to pay a reassessment fee.

Please contact your Personal Tutor or Student Advisor if you require further advice.

Examination Reassessments at an Alternative Location

If you are an on-campus student, you can request to take your resit(s) at a different Heriot-Watt campus and there is no charge for this. While attending a Heriot-Watt University campus is the preferred option, we recognise that exceptional circumstances may prevent some students from travelling. In such cases, you may apply to take your resit exam(s) at an alternative location, where the University will make arrangements with the British Council in your preferred location.
