Biography

I started my Sport and Exercise Sciences degree at Liverpool John Moores University with the intention to work in elite football as a physiologist. Following placements in elite sports environments I found a passion in diabetes research investigating insulin sensitivity and appetite control. Following this passion, I studied Clinical Exercise Physiology through an Master’s by Research (MRes) degree at Bangor University and a PhD at Northumbria University investigating clinical nutrition investigations to improve glycaemia in type 2 diabetes patients. I joined the University of Surrey where I managed the Surrey Human Performance Institute, a commercial and research laboratory. My work predominantly included the assessment of risk in pre-surgical colorectal cancer patients and the role that exercise may play in improving cardiorespiratory fitness outcomes before operation. I also taught on the BSc and MSc courses at the University of Surrey for Sport and Exercise Science, and Human Nutrition, respectively. In November 2023, I joined Heriot-Watt University as Assistant Professor in Sport and Exercise Science to convene on Sport Nutrition and Physiology teaching, as well as research and commercial goals of the University and Oriam Centre. I aim to produce high-quality research on optimising physical activity for cardiometabolic health with a goal to impact health guidance for the general population. Outside of work I love to cycle, play football, and hike the Scottish hills and mountains with friends, family and my Golden Retriever.
