Biography
Dr Hai Chen Tan is currently an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of Learning and Teaching of the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) Malaysia. Since joining Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in 2014, Hai Chen has held positions as the Programme Director for Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying, and Acting Director of Petroleum Engineering. He was responsible for leading the successful accreditations of four (4) programmes by BQSM and MQA, i.e. BSc (Hons) QS, BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management, MSc Construction Project Management and MSc Commercial Management & QS, and building the construction project management and QS academic team in Malaysia.
Prior to joining Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, he spent eight (8) years at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he led the team for the successful accreditation of the BSc (Hons) QS programme by BQSM and RICS. Over there, he was also involved in the development of UTAR’s Master of Project Management programme. Before that, he was a Research Associate at Loughborough University, UK, working on an EPSRC-funded research project. Dr Hai Chen Tan received his MSc in Construction Project Management (with distinction) and PhD from the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, Loughborough University, UK, in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
His research interests cover construction technology and informatics, contract administration, supplier performance management, cloud-based information systems for project management, BIM, knowledge management, sustainable development, etc. He developed cloud-based contract administration systems for projects adopting PAM and PWD standard forms of contract with the research funding from the Malaysian government.
He is the first author of the booked entitled “Capture and Reuse of Project Knowledge in Construction” (ISBN: 978-1-405-19889-9) published by Wiley-Blackwell, UK. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and a multi-term council member of CIOB Malaysia branch.
