
Biography
- Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering, Edinburgh University, 2008.
- M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Structural Engineering, Damascus University, 1998 and 1993, respectively.
- A full-time academic staff member at Damascus University from 1994 until 2015.
- Consultant Engineer at the Syrian Engineers’ Syndicate of Damascus.
- A chartered member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE, CEng).
- A member of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC) since 2005.
- A member of the national training team at the Syrian Engineers Syndicate from 2010 until 2015.
- A member of the Teachers’ Syndicate of Damascus since 1994.
Dr. Mustafa Batikha holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Edinburgh, UK. Since 1994, he has taught a variety of structural engineering courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels (e.g., Structural Analysis, Strength of Materials, Steel Structures, Concrete Structures, Composite and pre-stressed elements, Bridge design, Seismic design, and Tall buildings). Additionally, Dr. Batikha has led numerous research projects, both individually and through supervising students, across various areas of structural engineering. He has authored over 40 publications and has been a keynote speaker and panellist at numerous conferences, webinars, and events. He also serves as a reviewer and Guest Editor for high-impact journals.
From 2019 to 2023, Dr. Batikha was the founding editor of the Centre of Excellence in Smart and Sustainable Construction (CES2C) Research Bulletin. He served as the Associate Director of Research at the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure, and Society at Heriot-Watt University from 2016 to 2024, and was the Director of the Steel Structures Division at Damascus University from 2012 to 2014. He is a consultant engineer with the Syrian Engineers Syndicate in Damascus, a chartered member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), and a member of both the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC) and the national training team at the Syrian Engineers Syndicate and Teachers' Syndicate of Damascus.
Dr. Batikha has been involved in consultancy work since 1994, completing high-standard projects across several countries, particularly in the areas of material design (Cold-formed steel sections, Hot-Finished steel sections, and Reinforced-Concrete sections) and structural rehabilitation under seismic conditions.
