Matthias Benzinger

Profile

Why did you choose to study online with Edinburgh Business School?

The flexibility of online learning (Heriot-Watt) combined with face-to-face lectures (FHNW) on Saturdays. Therefore, I could continue working full-time 100% and fund my studies. And above all, to build personal networks, which is absolutely essential in Switzerland when looking for a new job.

What does this achievement mean to you now

Personal growth, a wealth of knowledge about cultures, business management and, above all, dealing with people.

How has your programme impacted your career and personal life so far?

I am already actively supporting women in the life sciences, helping them to build networks and raise awareness of their achievements, and I would like to develop into a people and culture role myself in the long term. Furthermore, I support my peer students in their job search, and I actively participate in professional networks and groups.

Overall, how has your experience been with Heriot-Watt?

Economics: One of our favourites in Switzerland. In light of current geopolitical tensions, inflation and tariffs, it is more relevant than ever.

Project Management: Solid content, and largely a repeat for many of us with practical experience. A proper PMP certification would be more helpful. Even for applications after the MBA.

People, Work & Organisations: This module was very successful and has had a lasting good impact on us. It would be good to have a module how to solve personal challenges/conflicts at work from a employee level.

What was your favourite course and why?

People, Work and Organisation. Linda delivered the course with great passion. We really enjoyed her videos, and what we learnt from them proved to be extremely useful in our day-to-day work. Without an understanding of how to deal with people, even the best MBA will not lead to success. Furthermore, economics. We have a passionate professor from Jordan who founded a company with his brothers (ranked 6th in Europe for packaging). He made us aware of geopolitics, inflation and opportunity costs, and taught us to ask simple but very essential MBA questions such as how many Swiss francs we would get back if we spent one.
