STEM inclusivity champions: Megna Rajagopal
Continuing our 'STEM inclusivity champions' series, asking Heriot-Watt alumni who are role models for underrepresented groups in STEM to share their journey, achievements, and advice, as inspiration to others in the STEM community.
In this installment we hear from Megna Rajagopal, a Clean Energy Market Research Analyst at Solarabic.
Alternative energy sources for electricity generation are becoming increasingly popular worldwide, making the reduction of fossil fuel use a priority. Since I learned about the harmful effects of fossil fuels as a child, I have been keen on sustainable development. Learning about energy efficiency in grade four was a turning point for me. From that moment, I committed to reducing my energy use and helping the Earth, which has always been a significant part of who I am. This passion guided my choice of major in Renewable Engineering and my Master’s in Global Sustainability Engineering from Heriot-Watt University.
Key moments throughout my journey have significantly shaped my path. I served as a class representative during my studies and am part of the Alumni Career Mentoring Programme at HWU. With over three years of experience in the solar energy industry, I worked as a Research Trainee at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) R&D center, studying the reliability of solar PV modules in desert conditions. I published a review paper on ‘Cooling Techniques for Performance Improvement of PV Systems’ and contributed to the Green Youth Majlis hosted by the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi, facilitating webinars on topics such as ‘Waste and Minimalist Lifestyle’ and ‘GCC's Circular Economy Approach.’
My volunteering experiences include research-based writing on eco-anxiety while directing the Blog and Newsletter at Yours Mindfully, where I also led a campaign for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. I participated in the Leaders of Change program by Emirates Nature-WWF, focusing on climate change awareness and action. My involvement in various events has allowed me to support the community and helped me win the Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work in 2023. Currently, I’m part of a packaging design competition at Heriot-Watt University and participated in a COP28 Simulation as Head of Delegations for Cuba, submitting key recommendations for climate change mitigation.

As a Clean Energy Market Research Analyst at Solarabic, my projects and academic background equip me to tackle sustainability challenges. Balancing multiple responsibilities while mentoring interns has tested my time management and prioritization skills, teaching me to balance self-confidence and assertiveness with support, which takes time and effort.
In the energy sector, women are often expected to be nurturing. While building strong, supportive teams is crucial, leadership also requires tackling complex technical issues and managing significant changes. I’m grateful to have a female mentor who provides constructive feedback and encourages my growth.
I’m excited about the growth of renewable energy, energy storage, and the hydrogen industry, which promise to create new job opportunities for women. These emerging trends can help shift traditional gender roles and foster a more inclusive environment.
A significant challenge has been the lack of female mentors and limited representation, making it hard to find relatable role models. While gender quotas are a step toward increasing representation, it’s vital that women are recognised for their skills, not just as placeholders.
The future of energy leadership must focus on sustainability, innovation, and collaboration. Investing in women leaders will unlock potential for effective leadership in the energy transition. Advocacy for gender equality and inclusive hiring practices is essential to create an environment where women can excel.
For young women aspiring to enter the energy sector, I recommend joining organizations that support women, like the Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition. Building a professional network and seeking mentors is crucial, as is continuously expanding knowledge and skills. Enjoying your work, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and voicing your opinions are important for personal and professional growth.
