Heriot-Watt University launches online AI MSc amid growing demand for talent
Heriot-Watt Online has announced the launch of its new MSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence, delivered in partnership with Coursera.
Building on the success of the MSc Computer Science launched in 2024, the new programme introduces a dedicated specialism in Artificial Intelligence, equipping learners with the advanced technical knowledge and practical skills required to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven economy.

Growing demand for AI skills
The launch comes at a pivotal moment for the global technology workforce. Organisations across every sector are accelerating investment in artificial intelligence, creating unprecedented demand for professionals with the skills to design, build and lead AI-powered innovation.
According to labour market intelligence provided by Lightcast, global demand for AI skills has increased by 124% year-on-year, while professionals with AI capabilities earn a median global salary of £103,186. These skills are in increasing demand across software engineering, data science, analytics, machine learning and digital transformation roles.
These figures reflect a significant shift in employer expectations. Rather than viewing AI as a specialist technology, organisations are increasingly seeking professionals who can combine core computer science expertise with practical knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Preparing graduates for careers in AI
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies advances in artificial intelligence and information processing as one of the most transformative forces reshaping the global economy. The report finds that 86% of employers expect AI and information-processing technologies to transform their businesses by 2030, while AI and big data rank among the fastest-growing skills required in the global workforce. Against this backdrop, the new MSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence has been developed to help learners acquire both the foundational computer science knowledge and specialist AI expertise needed to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving employment landscape.

Developed in partnership with Coursera, one of the world's leading online learning platforms, the programme combines Heriot-Watt’s academic expertise with flexible online delivery, enabling learners around the world to study alongside work and other commitments.
To broaden access to postgraduate study, the programme also offers a performance-based admissions pathway, reflecting the University's commitment to widening participation. Learners who may not meet traditional academic entry requirements can demonstrate their ability by successfully completing their first course, creating a flexible route into the MSc while helping address the critical shortage of skilled digital, computing and AI professionals.
