Survey into bullying and sexual harassment in UK research sector

Researchers at Heriot-Watt University are aiming to uncover the true extent of bullying and sexual harassment within the UK’s research and innovation sector.

Following an earlier study that explored the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on inequalities and backed by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the British Academy, this latest project invites individuals working in the sector, including postgraduate research students, to complete a confidential online survey.

This survey aims to build a detailed and honest picture of lived experiences related to bullying and sexual harassment in the sector.

The goal is to gather data on incidents of inappropriate behaviour in the workplace since 2023.

Leading this effort are members of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Caucus (EDICa) based at Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh campus.

The findings will be used to inform future policy and practice, with the aim of improving equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) across the research and innovation landscape.

Professor James Richards, an expert in Employment Relations at the Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, said: “This survey aims to build a detailed and honest picture of lived experiences related to bullying and sexual harassment in the sector.

“We’re seeking input from a wide range of voices and backgrounds across the UK. The survey takes around 10 to 20 minutes to complete, and all responses are completely confidential.

"Importantly, EDICa is increasingly seen as a basis for practical and evidence-based change regarding EDI across research and innovation, so your input is likely to help shape policy and practice in this area soon.”

In 2023, the University was awarded £4.2 million by the UKRI and the British Academy to establish the EDI Caucus to help improve standards in the workplace.

The three-year project focusses on underrepresented groups employed in the research and innovation sector.

The survey is now open and will close on September 5.
