PhD in Robotic Vision
Project Overview:
This PhD aims to develop an advanced SfM pipeline that harnesses artificial intelligence to enhance feature extraction, matching, and the speed of large-scale 3D reconstruction. Building on existing tools like COLMAP, you will create deep learning architectures tailored to challenging real-world conditions such as complex lighting, vast environments, and dynamic scenes.
The primary applications include construction monitoring and asset management, where high-precision 3D models aid in tracking project progress, evaluating structural integrity, and facility management. The resulting technology will support rapid, accurate spatial mapping and benefit sectors such as robotics, AR/VR, cultural heritage preservation, geospatial analysis, and digital twin development.
Location:
Heriot-Watt Dubai Campus. Please note that relocation to Dubai for the full duration of the project is required.
Duration:
48 months
Mode:
Full-time PhD only

Recruitment Process
First Round – Technical Interview:
An hour-long interview with Heriot-Watt Dubai staff to assess your technical skills and problem-solving ability. Candidates will prepare a 10-minute presentation about their background and project relevance, followed by rapid-fire questions on topics like mathematics, computer vision, machine learning, and coding. This interview may be recorded for internal review.
It’s essential to prepare thoroughly, as quick thinking and proficient use of pertinent terminology will be assessed. During this part of the interview, you'll need to demonstrate your ability to process questions swiftly and articulate your thoughts clearly.
Second Round – External Supervisor Meeting:
Selected candidates will meet with an external supervisor at Expo City Dubai to discuss motivation, research interests, and fit for the project.
